Yesterday when I got home from work Jolene , my barred rock hen, wasn’t there. She didn’t come home from wherever she was to roost. She wasn’t out on the patio this morning with the other ladies. I’ve been preparing myself for this since I decided to let them free range; it still hurts though.
That first one is actually a polish chicken and he’s a rooster. Thankfully only one of the nine I bought in the spring turned out to be male. He’s not too loud either and his crow sounds like someone stepping in a rubber chicken it’s cute.

Not for humans lol just chickens as far as I know. Their digestive systems are different than ours. Their bodies use grit and a cramping like motion to “chew” the food in their bellies.

Yeah but it’s good for them to eat their food off the ground because they need grit in order to digest anything and they get that from the dirt so I always put some food on the table but I also scatter it around on the ground

Thank you so much. It really is hard. We ended up with one rooster out of the nine chicks and even the little spats they have within their group are hard to watch. I have a feeling one of the older ladies will end up dominating the cock though, at least for a bit, he’s a weird lil guy lol.

I think it’s a pecking order thing, I’ve read that it can sometimes take a couple weeks and also that age the young ones get older the order may change

I like them both, each looks like it was painted by a different person which, in a way it was. The one from 2015 reminds me of wetlands on a spring day while the one from this year right feels more cozy, deep in the forest of a secret wonderland.

The temp doesn’t bother tbh, I take hot showers and rise off in the coldest water possible because I’m crazy. It’s the sensation of being that not wet but not quite dry, sort of humid sticky in between; drives me bonkers. Thanks for the cat laugh btw 😹

I love the water I love swimming I love taking baths I absolutely abhor the five thousand hours it takes for my body (hair excluded) to completely dry after I get out of the shower. How do people just jump out, wipe off and put clothes on without getting strangled by them?!
I’m guilty of being that person but that is because I have set times in my routine to consume news. If I’m not careful I can get so wrapped up in it that everything else in my life gets neglected. Being responsible for the well being of others who can’t care for themselves I don’t have that luxury.
