very few companies actually preserved the games they made in the 90s and early 00s, it was just the culture at the time to delete your work rather than try to permanently archive it that's why remasters/remakes can end up not quite right and having their own weird quirks even when trying to be 1:1
Any disks that they did have with old code were traditionally overwritten to make room for future projects.
Most Japanese game companies traditionally did not archive their games. They didn't revere their work to the extent that their fans did. Server storage back in those days was extremely expensive. They never thought anyone would care to go back to those old games years after release.
I've actually lost track of how many games this has happened to. Does Square Enix just not know what a hard drive is? Are there no servers ANYWHERE keeping track of this stuff? No paper documentation of code? What the hell are they doing over there?
