If it really was dangerous then Canada and EU governments would advise their citizens not to travel to the US. None have.

Your article says there's a geography professor's hypothesis that people born in England tipped the balance. He didn't say the only people voting for Brexit in Wales were English born, so how is it 100% an English phenomenon? Also, how does his theory answer Reform's current polling in Wales?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
The Welsh electorate also voted for Brexit.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure, Leo was asking me for stats about countries being at war. You're answering a different point.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, most claims are currently from Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. Who are they at war with?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Letting them work would just increase the incentives and boost arrivals.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
What about the ones who aren't fleeing war, ie most of them?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
What does that have to do with what I said, which was about Ireland?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course they may not want to move to Ireland, they might have wanted to go elsewhere and now they can't as freely as before. But you're the one referring to the UK as "Alcatraz", not me.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Your partner could apply for citizenship in the UK if they have settled status. I know the cost is high, but it seemingly solves the problem.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
I just explained why they are not trapped. You keep pointing to a graph as evidence they are, when the fact is they are not. They can leave immediately if they wish. Nobody is imprisoned here, as you said.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, I know. But the point is literally nobody is 'trapped' or 'imprisoned' here, as the OP asserted.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
No need to apologise for anything, the curse of social media!
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. This was the post I made. It is correct. You seem to be arguing a different point, for some reason.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
'We' as in the people the OP was addressing. I hope that is clear enough for you?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes I know. Where did I say otherwise? As for work, I still attend meetings and oversee some work done by our local offices across the EU, so it's not black and white. That is still permitted (and perhaps more common post-covid, where less on the ground presence is needed)
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. Do you agree with the OP's assertion that we are now imprisoned in the UK? Because we are not, as I pointed out.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Get what? Where have I said anything that is wrong?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
I know. I didn't say otherwise.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm aware. Just responding to your assertion that we're all imprisoned on our island. We're not. Anyone can emigrate any time they like. That's it.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Err ok. Just stating a fact, that you appear to have been unaware of? 🤷🏻♂️
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
How are we 'trapped' or 'imprisoned' here? Anyone can leave whenever they like, we have freedom of movement with Ireland. Which is in the EU.

Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
The closure was a nightmare for them indeed. Was all over the news here. Of course there has been less trade, but it's not a "ruined ghost town". I've been through the town many times, looks much as it ever did. Gyles spends a lot of time inventing stuff on here. Quite odd.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
"holyhead is ruined. like a ghost town now." Evidence for this, or did you just make it up? Because statistically it's the UK's second busiest ferry port.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
But none of those have advised their citizens not to travel to the US
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Which ones?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Where does that article say any of those countries have advised their citizens not to travel to the US? Here's Canada's travel advisory for the US. They've 'green rated' it for travel, saying it's safe. By contrast, Canada cautions against travel to Italy and France ('yellow rated').
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure, you first.

The weather this year may have impacted the growing season in the UK.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Language learning has been in decline for years at schools, even before 2016. Erasmus would be of more use if that were fixed first.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
We can only guess what's in the 2019 govt polling (and I see the order you cite was successfully appealed by the govt). What we do know is there is plenty of current polling to look at. The most recent poll cited in The National, has independence at 52%.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
If the government refused to release their polling, how do you know it had 'yes' at 73%?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Do you have a link to that story? I've never heard of it and can find no trace.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
That's an interesting point, it depends on the motives of those flying it. Those will naturally be varied when it comes to flying the national flag.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Interestingly, polling on Scottish independence hasn't moved much since the previous referendum. Then there are the widespread SNP losses at the last GE. I'd be interested to know how you conclude Scotland "already has its bags packed"? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion...
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Not to be pedantic but your post only makes sense if England and NI were to remain 'the UK', following Welsh and Scottish independence. In any event you may be correct that the most likely way in is as separate countries, in which case safe to say it's probably never going to happen.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
So how are we different to England then, in terms of rejoining the EU? The only thing you've pointed to is that we had different rules during covid times. That has nothing to do with our views towards Europe.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably, I don't see that much has changed.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't care but they shouldn't be flown at half mast.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
The Welsh electorate voted to leave the EU last time they were asked.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Would you say the same if there was a campaign to display EU flags everywhere? The author of that article says he doesn't mind seeing Palestine or Pride flags for example, he just objects to the England flag everywhere. Either you're against all flags, or none IMO.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent

Which of Canada, or any European countries, have advised their citizens not to travel to the US? None. Here is Canada's advisory for example. It's 'green rated' for travel. They're saying it's safe. By contrast, Canada cautions against travel to Italy and France.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Where did I 'come after you'? I posted an alternative viewpoint backed up with a news source quoting Zelensky himself. That isn't personal criticism. You had no need to 'defend yourself'.

Are you talking about the Dublin Agreement? After 2015 the UK received more migrants than it sent back under that Agreement. www.migrationwatchuk.org/briefing-pap...
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe, but precedent suggests lots of strong words and good optics, with little action thereafter.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Those are the optics, and many strong words will flow, but actions and follow up have been lacking in recent history.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Spiderweb was a success, but did it lead to an end to the war? No. You can focus on individual victories, but in the context of the conflict as a whole, not much has changed. The stalemate continues. Ukraine cannot win or reliably enter peace without US assistance.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
If that was true then EU leaders wouldn't even be at the White House. The fact is that Ukraine's future is reliant on the US. That is a failure.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Your take from that article is that they've been "a bit slow"? The EU has handed Ukraine's future to the US. Even now, there is no cohesive EU strategy towards Ukraine, but individual EU countries offer varying degrees of support.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm Welsh and the UK has supported Ukraine militarily before and after the invasion. But the lack of any cohesive EU strategy for years, and a stupid energy policy that even Trump used to warn Germany and others about, has left Ukraine's defence reliant on the US. That is a failure.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent

Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
The US has been increasingly unreliable. The point is the EU had years to get to a point where Ukraine wasn't dependent on American support, and failed. Even Zelensky is quoted here as saying EU guarantees of security without the US are worthless.

Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent

So it's ok when "rejoiners" repeat misinformation, but not when Brexit voters do?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
Not just medical insurance. It took nearly 4 months of chasing to get a car hire policy to pay out after I damaged the vehicle. In that time I had a £2k hole on my credit card.

Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent

Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
With all their EU advantages, you'd assume France, Germany and Italy would have grown their economies more than the UK's in 2024. France had the same growth. Italy and Germany had worse.
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
That's true but given what's apparently been happening, you'd think governments would caution their citizens against going there. Canada for example, cautions against travel to Italy and France, but not the US.

It's also wrong to suggest these questions weren't an issue before. They were, a border guard could have asked if they wanted. Now a computer screen will ask. What's changed?
Barney 🏴 (@barneygreenway.bsky.social) reply parent
They won't. This is the figurehead of the Rejoin movement. Another referendum would be a tirade of BS from both sides.
