There are ~80M (or 1 out of 3) eligible voters who didn't vote in the 2020 election, and that election had the country's highest voter turnout ever. 80M no-shows can't ALL be attributed to lack of local resources. People just don't like being swarmed and sold on joining a club.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
Sometimes I say "I'm currently aligned with today's Democratic party", because what I'm really saying is "I know my values, and I know what I don't like, and at the current moment the Democratic party is most-aligned with those values, but if you go off the rails, I'm not following."
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
I just want to say that your message really gets to the crux of why I think so many people don't vote. Yes, some of it has to do with lack of resources that are available in their locale, but I also think a lot of it has to do with feeling like a political party is trying to sell you something.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
Stop trying to reason with them. Focus on getting non-voters to show up at the polls. You'll find the vitriol and hypocrisy from a Evangelicals is a lot less frustrating when they're on the losing side of an election.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
James Dobson didn't care that he was a hypocrite because the end-goal was to get people to pay attention to what he was saying, and they did. Now you're trying to come up with a competing narrative, and the same audience doesn't care because they already agreed with Dobson (2/3)
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not about hypocrisy, because if it were, Dobson would have recognized it and cared. He didn't. Remember: when you point out hypocrisy, you're not really talking to James Dobson: you're talking to everyone else and hoping they will listen. But they're not. (1/3)

Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
I dream of a day when the media shifts its focus away from politicians and redirects it towards voters. We're all expected to read and be informed. A bunch of people who vote for a guy embroiled in scandal, deserve scrutiny just as much as the politician. Those voters owe everyone an explanation.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
And lest someone says "yeah, all those other positions win by popular vote, but they're gerrymandered so that Republicans get the popular vote", I'd buy that argument more if the turnout were a lot higher than 50%, which is ambitious for a State or Local election.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
Which is ironic, because while gerrymandering is to the advantage of the gerrymandering party, only the President can win with fewer votes, thanks to the Electoral College. Every single other elected office wins by popular vote.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
I have to push back on this. 1 out of 3 voters doesn't vote in the Presidential election, and that statistic is for the Office of the President itself, not all the other positions that have elections at the same time. For all other positions, the turnout is even worse.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, I agree. But I'm just pointing it out because some people probably do think their vote doesn't matter, and in a Presidential Election, it's kinda understandable why they feel that way. But in the case of Elise Stefanik running for Governor, absolutely every vote against her matters.
Ben Ricchio (@benricchio.bsky.social) reply parent
It's worth a reminder that only a Presidential candidate can lose the popular vote and still win the election, thanks to the Electoral College. No other election has the Electoral College. Virtually every other election in this country - from school board to Governor - is decided by popular vote.
