They should do what Canada does for selection. There is an independent advisory board that selects candidates and adds them to a list. The Prime Minister can then only select from that list. Once selected, the candidate is questioned by a committee. There is also mandatory retirement at 75.
We have a third party here in Canada. Sometimes it pushes the Liberals to be more progressive. And sometimes it causes a vote split between Liberals and Social Dems (NDP) enabling the Cons to win.

Absolutely, if there is a direct crossing. Engineering can solve that, as it has been done in many countries. But that's also only one way to do a crossing. Further up the island is close to the mainland, so a crossing would be much easier and avoid the deep water issue entirely.
Not if Carney does his job and convinces China's EV giants (BYD, especially) to set up a factory in Ontario. Auto workers may lose their jobs at GM and then start a new job at BYD. There's no reason to favour US companies over Chinese companies. BYD is better quality than Tesla, for example.

Canadians know, yes. So why is Carney still trying to negotiate? That's a bigger question here. He's dropped tariffs to appease Trump, in hopes of good negotiations for the new CUSMA. That's false hope. People are willing to let Carney play this out. But if he falls flat, he's likely a 1 term PM.
Punishing the US is part of it, yes. For multiple reasons, not limited to tariffs. But it's more about fairness. If the US is trying to destroy Canadian industries (and living here in BC I can tell you he is - forestry is dead), there has to be pushback. This is people's livelihoods.
The US boycott by Canadian consumers is vital. Agreed. However, if the PM is seen to be giving in or easing up (elbows down, if you will), it's more likely that Canadians will follow suit by easing up or stopping the boycott. He's the leader. He needs to lead by example. Elbows Up.

I'm not saying Carney isn't doing anything. Just pointing out the tariffs he imposed were supposedly as a response to US tariffs on steel, aluminum, lumber, etc. Those US tariffs have not been removed. So, removing our tariffs, without some public form of pushback, makes it seem he's giving in.
