There was one notable period of time at my old office when a bathroom door broke somehow, and getting a replacement took a while. The building was a historical landmark and the doors were vintage, so it had to be the right kind of door. The temporary fix: a shower curtain.

Every now and then I think of a comic I saw once about the clusterfuck that was the year 2020. Of course, they went and personified 2020 as a little cartoon figure, and when it said, “This wasn’t how I meant to be remembered,” looking all distressed and sad about it, I FELT SO BAD. Still do!

I couldn't rely on over-the-air reception, though, because we were in the Cascade foothills, and mountains can definitely mess with you. Years later I found the FCC's DTV Reception Maps website and it was kind of hilarious looking up what you could get via antenna at that address. Read: not much.

One note about the Kobo app, on the iPhone at least: I had serious problems with it for a while (multi-second waits on page turns, footnotes that didn’t work, etc.) but they recently rebuilt the thing and it seems to be working MUCH better. So if you had similar issues, give it another try.

Point 5 is definitely why I had a lifeguard check in on me once. I was just idly trying out if I could float vertically with just my head tipped back, which I could, but the lifeguard (entirely rightly!) called out. I told him I was fine and he left me to it. Exactly. I had a hilariously pointless meeting with a (well-meaning, let's be fair) nutritionist at SCCA / Fred Hutch who gave me generic "eat less red meat and more vegetables" advice, but that was all she had, because it was so screamingly obviously genetic. Diet won't make it go away.

Yeah, that tracks. And I keep hearing that people are getting it younger and younger on average. In my family it seems to either hit early or late; my dad's mom died in her 40s, and I was pretty much on her schedule, I think.

Yeah, I was 39. Practically the first thing a nurse told me when I came up from sedation was, "It's a REALLY good thing you came in when you did." If I'd waited even a year or two, it assuredly would have been cancerous by then.

(and I do tend to put "lucky" in heavy quotes, because Dad should have had his screenings, and no one should have had to die for me to get a doctor to stop telling me my symptoms were "just stress," but that's another rant. The whole thing's an emotional spike pit, though.)
