Many companies really, really are too big to dent at a consumer level, and you'd get more mileage out of making a stink about it with your congressional rep than you would patting yourself on the back for your grocery list.

What I always think of: my friend's mom started boycotting Nestlé in the '80s. I took some cues from her along the way, and many products are easy to swap out, but the fact remains: it's 2025 and they're still doing all the same shady shit even if I've spent 40 years not making Toll House cookies.

That reminded me: years back I had to do a big panel of blood tests, and on my way out, the receptionist called after me, "Go eat some meat." She wasn't kidding. I went straight to work but was exhausted. The first thing nearby that opened for lunch was a burger joint, so I went straight there...

"Pat, why do you carry that ridiculous 600mm lens on long hikes?" Buddy, I can see mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika.

A pika sits on a mossy rock. Tighter crop of the same pika, focusing on its head. An even tighter crop, focusing more on the pika's eye. An extremely tight crop of the pika's eye, emphasizing their reflection of an early morning mountain scene.

That is indeed an excellent bird.

@MattWalshBlog let the following bullshit fall out of his mouth hole: “Remember when they spent years telling us to panic over the hole in the ozone layer and then suddenly just stopped talking about it and nobody ever mentioned the ozone layer” and then @DKThomp cast the appropriate side eye with this: “What happened is scientists discovered chlorofluorocarbons were bad for the ozone, countries believed them, the Montreal Protocol was signed, and CFC use fell by 99.7%, leading to the stabilization of the ozone layer, perhaps the greatest example of global cooperation in history.”

Exactly. I had a hilariously pointless meeting with a (well-meaning, let's be fair) nutritionist at SCCA / Fred Hutch who gave me generic "eat less red meat and more vegetables" advice, but that was all she had, because it was so screamingly obviously genetic. Diet won't make it go away.

Yeah, that tracks. And I keep hearing that people are getting it younger and younger on average. In my family it seems to either hit early or late; my dad's mom died in her 40s, and I was pretty much on her schedule, I think.

I'm sorry you had to go through the ordeal you did, though. It's such a sneaky disease. :(

Yeah, I was 39. Practically the first thing a nurse told me when I came up from sedation was, "It's a REALLY good thing you came in when you did." If I'd waited even a year or two, it assuredly would have been cancerous by then.

(and I do tend to put "lucky" in heavy quotes, because Dad should have had his screenings, and no one should have had to die for me to get a doctor to stop telling me my symptoms were "just stress," but that's another rant. The whole thing's an emotional spike pit, though.)
