Now more than ever. The Conventions and treaties were drawn up at a time when everyone remembered the consequences of not having them. Today most of those people are dead, and we're left with people who don't have first hand knowledge of those events.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
When journalists get an answer like that, why don't they just say, "That's great, but you haven't actually answered the question."?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Some of the odd pronunciations come from Norman French place names being anglicised over time to make them less "French". So Beauchamp is pronounced "Beecham" and Belvoir is pronounced "Beaver" for example.

Do they deliver to Dubai?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Did they also state categorically that leaving the EU wouldn't affect British people's ability to work in the EU?
Sam Vimes (@samvimes6.bsky.social) reposted
Sure, no problem, as long as the frog faced cunt gives up his EU pension..... no? Didn't think so. Also, you only get a pension out if you've put something in, so blaming immigration is just another dog whistle to his moron followers.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Ironically, many of his moron followers either already have a state pension, or are fast approaching pension age, but of course they won't think it will apply to *their* pension.

So, to be clear, the government puts asylum seekers in a hotel. The council opposes it in the courts (and loses), so the residents vow to punish the council. I don't think this sends the message they thought they were sending. 🤣

Well done the Red Roses, but probably the best game of the tournament so far has to be USA against Australia!

John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely! Why doesn't anyone ever ask Reform that?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
But there won't be. We've just had 6 weeks of Farage having a permanent spot on every news channel to spout nonsense with no accountability, but now that Parliament is back in session, and Farage is on holiday in the US, other. MPs may get a word in.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
It freaks my wife out 🤣
Sarah Murphy (@13sarahmurphy.bsky.social) reposted
There can be absolutely no “shock” about this. The media has been shamelessly platforming Reform all summer. All summer, we’ve had hate-mongering headlines about immigration. It’s a tedious and grim inevitability that you’ve made people angry enough to want to vote for this shit in response.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
No it's not. It's Egdim backwards! 🤣
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Not sure about worse, but a whole different set of problems. 😏
Liberal Democrats (@libdems.org.uk) reposted
Reform’s move to block local journalists from reporting on their work is straight out of Donald Trump's playbook. It's a cornerstone of our democracy that politicians of all stripes are held to account — but for some reason Farage's cronies think they can make themselves exempt.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
He's right. So why give just anyone access to weapons that are capable of killing dozens of people? Gun control works in every other developed country in the world.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
I loved the books. The film follows the storyline enough to be recognisable, but is different enough to keep you interested, but at the risk of committing a spoiler, a follow up is going to be difficult without a major character from the books. 🤫
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
If the danger of protests happening is a reason to prevent an event happening, then watch out for lots of protests about electricity pylons being erected the length of East Anglia 🤷
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Once Parliament is sitting again, and Farage is AWOL (again), will that mean we don't have to see him on every news programme?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
If they can simply repeal the Human Rights Act, it shows the dangers of leaving an international treaty on Human Rights. If they don't like the Common Law, they can pass an Act of Parliament to overturn it. That's the point. And if you say, "but they won't", you haven't been paying attention!

If he can remove due process from people you don't like, he can remove it from you. Those "legal restrictions" prevent the authorities from simply locking up anyone who disagrees with them. They apply to everyone or no-one.

While I think some of that is true, and probably the reason for hyping the "protests" up ahead of time, the truth is that a dozen or so people gathering in the road doesn't warrant more than a few seconds of local news coverage.

A design for a turbine would have to include a way to divert anything flowing with the tide, such as seaweed (and sadly these days, plastic), away from the blades. If jellyfish have no means of locomotion (I thought they did, but could be wrong) then that includes them.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Is there? Do you have evidence? Remember that the tide turns the turbine. The blades don't turn on their own. They aren't propellers; they don't create water flow.

That sounds like a stretch to me. Do wind turbines reduce wind currents?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Noise pollution was my first thought as well, but I can't see that being worse than other noise caused by shipping. I genuinely wondered if there was anything else. The blades turn with the tide, they don't drive it. Is there an ecosystem downside?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
Do they? If so, they don't have to. That would be a design flaw.
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
His evidence that "the people want him to" are the voices in his head 🫤
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not a dam. It simply utilises the movement of the tide to turn a turbine. Can you give an example of the negative effect that could have on the ecosystem?
John Hull (@johnhull.bsky.social) reply parent
According to Fart, they didn't buy them. That implies payment. He said it didn't cost the government anything. This was a gift; like the new, old aeroplane. Does that mean that Fart takes them with him when (if) he leaves office?

The sad thing is that it's made other (legitimate) uses of words derived from the same root impossible. In music "retardando" means "held back" as in tempo, and for me the simplest way to help pupils remember it is to talk about car engines and "retarding or advancing timing". I can't use that now.

I'm waiting to hear the reasoning behind the court decision on Asylum Accommodation today. If, as I suspect, it's that Epping Council is correct in it's assertion that an hotel that houses asylum seekers is no longer an hotel, and will need a change of use application to Planning, then 💥
