Agree. When an author commits to a series that is going to tell a single long story, they should be aware that they are entering into a kind of loose social contract with their readers, who have a reasonable expectation that the author will finish that series if they can.

Well said. I thought the same about the original Shannara Series, each book which stands alone, versus the follow-up Heritage of Shannara series, which the first book ended in a bloody cliff hanger. Let's go further back. Who would be satisfied reading JUST Fellowship of the Ring?
When a series is written as one long story in which the main plot started the first book isn't resolved until the last book, it becomes much more difficult. For example the original Shannara series (Sword, Elfstones, Wishsong) were easier to enjoy separately than the 4 book Heritage of Shannara.

What happened? I get the impression somebody was wanting another author to finish Martin's series. I've heard that suggestion before. I don't have a stake as I stopped reading halfway through book 3 and didn't want to be frustrated by the slow release of the remaining books in the series.
