As an example, here in the UK we had a right leaning gov for almost 15 years, when the (traditionally) left leaning party came into power at the last election they doubled down on a lot of right wing policy because they were concerned about losing support from those who had changed sides. 1/2
My concern is that whatever has changed will become normalised in the meantime and they won't change things back afterwards for fear of upsetting voters.
