It's about context. A bridal photo, graduation photo, etc. or a very artistic photo can be wonderful displayed in someone's house. If I saw a bunch of photos of someone all over their walls I'd wonder where there friends and family were. My Grandma had a "no family photos in the living room" rule

They don't go without pay. They are paid for every day they are on active duty. They won't get extras like housing allowance and certain duty bonuses though. If their guard pay is less than their usual work, they take a pay hit that can really affect their family, on top of being gone.
