The last of the swifts here are about to leave for Africa. They are the youngsters hatched this year, and dozens have been swooping near my window, hopefully looking for somewhere to nest next year. I will miss their little screeches and fly-bys over winter.
I am sorry to hear that it was so dreadful. But life is too short to be cold, wet AND anxious about the route. And you can live to fight another day.

London DLR has had driverless trains for many years, but always have a guard on the trains to ensure safety if anything goes wrong. UK and the USA aren't like China or Hong Kong, which have superb amounts of investment in people-owned infrastructure. UK/USA lag behind.

Spotted in the south of France....where a driver is checking their options for the weekend on their mobile phone. Here the local buses and many train journeys are just €1 or €1.30.

You might be surprised. My neighbours had 20 blooms this year, but missed seeing them flower 🤨. I had seen many bats flitting nearby, presumably enticed by the plants somehow. Bats are often quick and flitty, so you may mistake them for a blink or not notice them at all.
France has, what, 57 creaky ageing reactors and they haven't a clue what to do with all the "déchets". They have discussed hurling them into space, burying them in glass (!) and throwing them down very deep crevices. Meanwhile their déchets build up and up and up, to be radioactive for centuries.
All cyclists should be allowed by law to use wheels like this, with sharp scythes on the hubs. Could be a bit dodgy for weekend club rides, but great for close passes.
