They've met before. The cat will just disappear.
Life time of living in BC has given me an appreciation for the absurd in politics and real life. Play bridge quite badly. Used to write. Love train travel. Happily married 40 years to man who does not play bridge and hates trains. I don't donate.

She's very anti-social. Son is bringing "granddog" (a large mixed breed) and I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the cat being cowed.

Has anything been heard from those who might be getting the ducks in a row? (VP etc.)
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
Also coffee. I don't know why we go through American distributors for it, but it does take some time to get new supply chains established, so we'll be getting American processed coffee for awhile.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
Last night? Thinking of the Death of Stalin movie. Some ducks have to be marshalled.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
They didn't talk about it (at least to lowly me) but sometimes at the Christmas party they'd break into stories about chasing Rommel across the desert. It probably wasn't as much fun as they made it sound.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree. But there was more risk taking from survivors than there seems to have been in later years. I guess if you've risked your life, risking some money by starting a business isn't that scary. (just my observation) Not much seemed to faze the bosses.

A lot of the old farts in my life when I was going to school and later working were vets. There's a lot of "greatest generation" narrative, but I think most of them wanted an adventure. (and then wished they hadn't) My dad felt like he'd missed out by being too young.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
WWI. None of my direct ancestors were in WWII. My dad was too young. His dad was too old. I had great uncles in the RCAF and f-i-l was in an Italian army (there were more than one - I think in King's army)

There was a post about problems with texting with boomers ✋ I just had "what kind of milk should I buy" changed to some gibberish about music. It's not the boomer. It's the google guesses if you hit the wrong letter.

My great grandfather enlisted in his 40s. He was discharged because of poor health. I think it says something that he was desperate to make money to support his family to extent that he enlisted.

Having a gardener seems like a really exotic thing to do. There are a few in my town, but they charge what they're worth and therefore more than I want to pay. I wonder how suburban Americans who take it for granted will cope when their gardeners are deported?

There's a lot to worry about - like nuclear storage, which was a big fear in the 1970s. Now people seem to just hope that will turn out fine. We've made huge advances. No one ever thought there would be whales in the Thames again. I'm not against environmental improvements inc. reducing emissions.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
We didn't pay that much attention to the old farts of our time, either, and they did pretty interesting things.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
The powers are pretty limited. That's why I like it. The head of state can't meddle with the politics of state. Most spares don't get a lot of attention after sibling becomes monarch. otoh, they get to live their own lives. I think Harry should be happy.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
We are living in very weird times. The thing about the monarchy is the continuity. Whenever it is that William does become King, it will be pretty seamless. In another 100 years there will still be 5 Kings - hearts, spades, clubs, diamonds and England (and commonwealth)
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel sorry for the generations following us. No one made us listen to Frank Sinatra, because that's all that played on the radio. We listen to CBC mostly in the car, and there is a bunch of newer music showcasing up and coming. I don't know how many younger people listen to CBC though.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
It's the same playbook as the post covid drive.

I went to BCIT (BC Institute of Technology) and we had Pub nights with live music. Bryan Adams played when he was with Sweeney Todd. I can't remember others - he might have been the one who became the most famous. It was a fun time (1976 to 1978)
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
Hope it won't be for awhile. I think it would be a horrible job, and I like the monarchy (as the political system we have - don't really care who wears the funny hat)
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
My "one that got away" was when Rolling Stones came to Vancouver (might have been 1998, or 1994 tour.) We didn't want to go (not huge fans) but passed a pub night before concert with a sign "tonight only, Rolling Stones and thought Yeah right. It was right. I guess they used to do that.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
Different times, when 4 kids under 15 could go by themselves to a concert on the bus. It was a bit scary waiting for the bus we transferred to in the dark.

I tagged along with brother and friends. At first I thought we were going to Chilliwack. (the town) I must have been 13. It was a very late night for me.

The first concert I went to. I think in 1973 at the PNE.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
There's no point to warning people about things they can't control, imo. We can say to cut down on fossil fuels or whatever, but "or we're all going to die!!!" doesn't add much to the practical measures. It's a contrary thing - we haven't died, so might as well not worry about it.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
What is your ranking list? I don't see many movies in theatre because I live in a tiny town with no theatre, but I did enjoy Anora. Skiing is weird. Here strap on these boards and go hurtling down a mountainside. Take your kids! Spend time in the ER! If it wasn't a sport it would be abuse.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
skiing for me. (I'm not a good skiier. I figure 3 seconds of bliss twice in 20 years) Anyway - not a memorable movie, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

But he had to leave the girl behind because he's a lone wolf who only wants to feel the bliss of driving into the sky, like Nevil Shute's character in the On the Beach novel. (Auto racing husband said they got the bit about the feeling right, fwiw.)

It was basically a romance, but got both men and women into the theatre. I enjoyed it, and so did husband, for different reasons, but husband (who loves racing) did find some of the Telledaga Nights plotting a bit off-putting. He expected to see Ricky Bobby appear.

If you ever compared a vaccinated kid to a sick kid, you see the bright eyes, the healthy demeanor, the enthusiasm for the day against the listnessesness, the pallor, the coughing and sneezing, the rash, the fever. And there's a big difference between parents, too. Having a sick kid hurts.

20 years after my baby left for university, I still hate the labour day weekend. When my kids were in school, I used to wake up thinking: I only have 13 years left. I only have 12 years left. I only have 10 years left. Then it was no years left. It went too fast.

I live on the Columbia River, and the treaty was being negotiated, but that's on hold now. My MP is CPC. I'd want him to know what's going on, and don't think he would be able to know everything if he didn't have security clearance. It's not just about threats, but that's important.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't believe it either. I think many people will continue to go because they have condos (or RV spaces) and friends, but the tide is turning. We've been going to Hawaii every year for the last 20 years. Not anymore.

The Stanley Cup started as a cup and just kept growing. Lord Stanley probably didn't expect that many names to keep being added to it. Some of the original is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the old silverwork is quite beautifully engraved.

Why would it be a surprise? Exporters can't eat a tariff and keep prices the same unless they are in the business of gouging or maybe supplying illegal substances. (or are tech companies, which might fulfill both)

Robert Harris' book Pompeii has characters reacting to all the things that are happening before the explosion and trying to fix the situation - water being cut off, poisoned water, etc I see parallels with climate. We have to try to fix things, but what if there's a volcano we don't know about?
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
I respect your right to disagree, but let me make one more point. MPs are supposed to represent their local constituents (although some get this backwards and represent their party) Sometimes things happen that effect their riding that require security briefings. They should be prepared.
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't know why the CPC keeps electing people as leader and then trying to change them. It's like a young woman who thinks she can fix her boyfriend. O'Toole was the best of the latest, but he really went off the rails. Why pretend to be a pilot when you're a navigator (job in military)?
SusanDe (@susande.bsky.social) reply parent
I honestly think it should be across the board. Employees don't get to decide what security clearance they need. Politics changes. A backbencher can be a cabinet minister or a shadow minister on whim of leader.

When I was younger, the idea of tea dances in old books was bizarre. Now I think I'd love to get to a tea dance with a good band. I'd drink tea and eat crumpets (not sure what they are) and dance, and I'd be home at 6:00 or 7:00 and be able to go to bed before 10.
