You make very good points. Progress is happening, but it will be a very long time until the utopia you want will happen. For example, you mentioned synthetic lubricants. Synthetic lubricants come from chemically modified materials, such as petroleum components.
You make a very good point about coal. Yes, refining oil into fuel will taper off the same way coal is doing. But unlike coal, oil is a part of too many products for it to remain in the ground.
Right now, people in my country, Canada (83.26 years), can expect to live five or six years longer than Americans (77.43 years). After the damage that this president has done, that gap is only going to get bigger.
While the demand for oil will drop, it will never be zero. Oil is part of too many things, from the plastic used for wiring insulation to the lubrication of moving parts. To leave all the oil in the ground is to step back to a world with short life spans & be limited to how far you could walk.
