Shooting guns is actually very expensive, so most don't actually do it that often. Criminals, murderers and mass shooters don't usually have very big collections of guns because to get a big collection requires you to be mentally stable and competent to be able to do so.
It is just a collector thing ultimately. I myself in a past life am guilty of it. The vast majority of US gun nuts are just people that love shooting guns, but love talking about, reading about and thinking about shooting guns way more than actually doing it. This leads to big collections.
