What I loved about driving manual sports cars for 25 years was being closer to what is happening in the motor. What I loved even more about driving an EV is the direct connection to the motor. Total control.

The one time we had a problem they caught it before we did! Basically one of our battery banks was not charging properly and just needed a reboot. They contacted me and scheduled someone to come out and check it out. I was impressed. @enphaseenergy.bsky.social
Michael DiTullo (@d2lo.bsky.social) reply parent
One thing I was particular about, I didn't want a system with a battery from one company, a smart switch from another, and an inverter from a third. If there was an issue I wanted one company to deal with. This is whyI went with an Enphase system: enphase.com

We were driving by a gas station yesterday & my wife commented how she doesn't even see them anymore. We noted how high the price of a gallon of gas is... that's a lot of money to turn 80% of it into wasted heat! Imagine how high the price would be if the US government stopped subsidizing it?

This prompted me to write an email to my city councilors here in Portland; @councilorclark.bsky.social @councilorgreen.bsky.social and @councilorzimmerman.bsky.social . My take is the staffs value is that we have their intelligence, integrity, and empathy guiding decisions, and writing is thinking.

Those two vehicles aren’t competitive. The Mustang Mache E is a class above. I would consider the Escape to be a competitor of the Hyundai Kona EV though. It starts at $33k.
Michael DiTullo (@d2lo.bsky.social) reply parent
This! Not to mention EVs are pretty much at price parody with new gas cars. Have you seen the prices on ICE vehicles lately?
Michael DiTullo (@d2lo.bsky.social) reply parent
Totally. And if I’m driving longer than 370 miles I’m going to need a substantial stop for lunch which is longer than it takes to charge anyway.

It’s almost like lighting an explosive fluid thousands of times per minute in a metal block only for 80% of that energy to be wasted as heat and only 20% harnessed to move a vehicle with 3x the amount of moving parts is just a bad idea? 🤷♂️ EV life is just better. ☺️

This really irks me. The Biden administration did so much great work pushing renewable energy development. The Trump administration is clawing it back. Net effects: - job cuts - electricity price increases - foreign investment pull back - deeper into climate change - reliance on oil billionaires

That’s awesome. E-bikes are fantastic. The EV switch was a massive mental shift. I had no idea how much of my brain was devoted to thinking about oil changes & tune ups in my gas cars. EVs just don’t need much. First time I should need brake pads is 120k miles! It will take me 14 years to hit that
Michael DiTullo (@d2lo.bsky.social) reply parent
🤷♂️ I think Scalzi could have made that decision in private. But he put it out there for conversation.
Michael DiTullo (@d2lo.bsky.social) reply parent
My insurance cost is the same. 3 years in no maintenance. First major maintenance will be 60k miles, just brake fluid. Not pads and rotors, just the fluid. You have some great questions. This link might have a lot of the answers you are looking for: interactive.carbonbrief.org/factcheck/el...

The plan was to make up for lost gas taxes which have been kept ridiculously low in this state and gas sales are way down due to EV adoption here. The original plan was to make ALL vehicles pay the per mile tax and for there to be a weight element but republicans threatened a walk out.
