Not just bad at diplomacy, but there aren't any clear, sensible goals - other than to make Trump feel powerful and get his Nobel Peace prize.

Might as well eliminate thoughts and prayers, since they don't seem to be solving the problem. It's the guns, unlike any other civilized country.
Jim Erskine (@jimers.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course Trump got played. He and his loyal foot soldiers still don't understand that Putin has no desire to end the "special military operation" unless on his terms. And Ukraine is not the only country he has in his sights.

Trump's rationale for tariffs and the lack of consistency is the real embarrassment.

Trump doesn't seem to see that some people are still immune to his threats. Jack White criticized Trump's Oval Office decor. The White House then called White a "washed-up, has-been loser... masquerading as a real artist." And White, undeterred, posted an absolutely blistering takedown in response.

Trump goes into this meeting wanting to "make a deal", to promote his self-image as a master negotiator. So he'll have something to offer. Putin of course will not back down and hasn't changed his tune on Ukraine sovereignty. I don't see anything positive for Ukraine coming out of this meeting.

Correct: Any tariff revenue collected by the govt has the same effect as a tax increase on the importing company, which is then passed on, at least partially, to their customers. A business tax increase and tax on predominantly lower income consumers.
