The more we live in cities, the safer the natural environment can be from us. The biggest threat we pose to our natural environment is our rapacious sprawling for suburban lots in the most arable areas of the country. And we can make cities livable, indeed, even walkable! If we design them as such.
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. But learning to live in higher densities is part of that. We could stop expanding the sprawl and double our population. We could build greener buildings and renewable energy. No reason we couldn't grow our population while reducing our (extravagant) footprint. If only we wanted to.
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
There is space for immigration without terraforming the deserts. We just need to grow up and build more dwellings, and take the opportunity to do so more densely near transport hubs, rather than in sprawling suburbs. The only resources we lack are political courage and common sense.
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the way. Mock them.

All true, but it's an eerie reminder of where qanon was in the US in 2015. It's a foreign influence op, with the goal of a fascist take over. In the US it worked pretty well. I'd like to think Australians are less prone to propaganda, but I'm not confident.

Medical licenses and expertise in general are too woke. We need more festering whale carcasses and brain worms in public health.
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
True. It's a different time. Ned was dealing with a colonial British police force, so he could garner a lot of sympathy from locals. Other than that, there's not much difference. The Kellys were pretty terrible guys. It just comes down to whether you see the govt/police as legitimate.

Have a baby, and you have increased the capita without increasing the production for 2 decades. So... GDP/Capita falls. Someone immigrated, you increase the capita and *also* increase production (also taxation). Immigration is the easy way to grow an economy! But some of them are brown, so... 🤷
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, they have a point that the only way the government can tell you what to do, ultimately, is by force. But what they don't get is that force matters. If they want their own country, they need to go make one (good luck with that), but this is our country, and they will obey our laws or suffer.

This mode of prayer is an act of empathy. When Republicans do it, it is a cynical distraction to avoid taking action. Pete cannot be accused of that, as an advocate of gun control. For additional explanation: We pray not that it changes God, but that through it, God might change our own heart.

But I'm Australian, not Camadian, and I'm talking about every single advanced economy in the world having a measurably better design of healthcare than the US, as measured by real world outcomes like life expectancy, maternal mortality, etc. No system is perfect, but one is just obviously wrong.

Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep. When you have to look at Turkey and Mexico to find economies *without* this feature, it highlights that single payer is normal in an advanced economy. The US is an outlier.

Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
Those throwaway lines are always misleading. If healthcare was *actually* unobtainable for any significant number, the statistics on health *outcomes* for the US would not look like a 3rd world outlier among 1st world nations. Outcomes > propaganda talking points.
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. It's better than anything Americans have had before. But in Australia, almost all prescription drugs cost ten bucks or less. Why? Government single payer plus government subsidies. It means everyone gets good healthcare.
Kevin Bennett (@kbkev.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm Australian. We get measurably better healthcare than Americans for far less per capita, and we're not excluded from anything. I earn a lot of money, so I am required to pay a gap. I can insure most of it. It has all been done before. By literally every advanced economy in the world.
