Ah, here's a more likely explanation. bsky.app/profile/seth...

George Washington inauguration too. Wondering which specific thing he's going for with the shirt, because nothing about his presence involves giving anyone the protections enshrined the constitution.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
And, of course, there's the Confederate flag, which is now flown by racists, people dog-whistling a racist message by tryig to argue it's heritage or, at a minimum, people who are completely comfortable with being amongst racists.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I tend to think that Americans don't celebrate divisions like states because most of our state flags SUCK (New Mexico, Tennessee and a few other ones are cool.) And, of course, the Union flag in the Civil war was generally the US flag, albeit with fewer stars.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
There have been recent movements to fly the flag when, say, protesting Trump, to show that this is about an opposition to him, his policies and his fanbase (MAGA types always try to conflate it into "why do you hate America"), but it's definitely complicated on this side of the pond, too.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
In the US, a lot of people fly the US flag, and often, it's just garden-variety love of country (maybe someone served in the military), but fetishism of the flag (and backing laws to protect the flag) are a very right-wing thing.

Can they do a Liz Truss and find a new Prime Minister without holding new parliamentary elections?
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
This totally looks like he lost a bet, and I've set my mind to wondering what kind of humiliation would have been on the other side of that bet if he had won.

Walleye on a stick and Sweet Martha’s cookies (both excellent) await!
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t expect a candidate to agree with me on everything, but things like antagonizing trans people and people doing their best to survive without a roof over their heads are dealbreakers for me.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social)
Just watched the Jen Psaki montage of Republicans holding town halls and being berated by their constituents. The guy from Alabama abruptly ending one while the most deep south accent in history yells “bye, Felicia” warmed my heart.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
The deal is that we pay them a modest salary to stay ready with a weekend each month and a few weeks and we call on them if there's a war or a natural disaster, not to be political pawns or because Trump wants to punish an entire city to avenge Big Balls.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd have to imagine the Guard hates it too -- get yanked out of your day job, maybe have to work out childcare and they don't have anything for you to do so you have to twiddle your thumbs at the Lincoln Memorial, a train station or a Krispy Kreme.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
If it DOES happen, predicting that: - None of the Trump teflon extends to JD, who has all of the dickishness but none of the charisma and gives off a "bully's toady friend" vibe. - Even if it's an obvious medical thing, MAGA will still completely blame him and go straight-up QAnon on him.

I'm in Illinois and there were plenty of appointments available starting next Thursday (which I'm guessing is shortly after they're getting the shipment.) Thinking someone in one of the neighboring states might be able to sign up for an appointment here.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
If I’ve arrived at your chatbot, it’s because I couldn’t google what I needed and it wasn’t in your FAQs and I grudgingly went to the chat because someone will probably answer faster than it will take to get to a person through the phone system.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Any attempt to actually solve my problem or “deflect” the call back to something on the webpage has failed miserably.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve found every chatbot encounter to be completely useless except for starting off with collecting my info and doing an initial multiple choice question to determine which actual person the chat should route to.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Zohran has been incredibly clear about how proud he is of New York, how much he loves being a New Yorker and how much he wants to make his city more livable for others. He doesn’t owe any of that gratitude to Vance or anything he stands for.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
(I'd add that any candidate should be looking at how Mamdani, AOC, Eric Swalwell and Tim Walz handle press, social media and outreach and seeing what they can use. Some of it might not be age-appropriate for all candidates, but most of it is just good communication adapted to modern media.)
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Also doesn't hurt that the people negatively affected by the rent stabilization stuff are NYC landlords, a group most NYC residents aren't fond of and he's been able to make hay out of them heavily funding Cuomo in an effort to keep rents high.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Zohran is an exceptional talent, but I'm really hoping that Democrats everywhere are studying this and seeing what they can borrow from it in terms of mannerisms, framing and just generally addressing questions head on.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
At the moment he's still over 50% approval and he's a lame duck. But he's going to run for president at some point and this needs to get tattooed to him.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
They built it with no sewer facilities, no water source and no power source (except generators running fuel that also needed to be trucked in.) With the construction cost, it cost at least $4,000 per detainee per day, most of whom hadn't been charged with a crime. bsky.app/profile/bgru...
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Also hoping Democrats pound the table on how they planned it, who got the bids, etc. It's Florida. If someone shines the light of truth on the process, they'll find a ton of Republican donors and family members at the companies.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Now would be a great time for Democratic state legislators to start pounding the desk about an audit of the process, how the bidding process was conducted and, inevitably, whose donors and family members work for the contractors who got the business.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm personally hoping they stick Florida with the $250 billion for this. DeSantis was all too eager to build it and he didn't do any of the required preparation and studies. Their voters will ignore abuses of immigrants, but they'll notice throwing a quarter billion dollars down a hole.

Trump and Harris split men under 29 nearly half and half, while women under 29 went Harris 61-37%. Guessing it's a pretty lonely existence for young, single MAGA guys out there who are in college or in a town that isn't bright red.

Wondering if anyone can place what kind of writing or whatever is on the map of Texas on the hat to narrow it down a little further (e.g. is it something pertaining to a specific group?)
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely, and I completely understand how anyone would look at the level of harassment coming from the president and RFK Jr's misinformed goons, but leaving just lets them put someone in there compliant.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Additionally, I'd imagine that the labor supply for food service jobs has dropped because of ICE grabbing and deporting undocumented employees and people with pending asylum claims.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I fully understand why someone wouldn't want to deal with presidential-level harassment, Trump's fan club or be involved when the Cabinet member over their department turns their sights on destroying it. I can't blame them for resigning, but the more effective tactic is still to fight it.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
But the protections and the process provide a lot more opportunity to kick up a ton of dust, where a resignation just shows up as a line in a news story on one day.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
But the next tier down are career people, who are protected by the Civil Service Reform Act. Of course, Trump has attempted to fire the Merit Services Review Board and is arguing that he has a constitutional right to fire anyone who reports up to him and that's still being litigated.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm ALWAYS team fight it. I know the CDC director is a political appointment (e.g. nominated by the president, approved by the Senate), and with a few exceptions that are being litigated now, the president can fire appointees for pretty much any reason...
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
It depends. They put the restrictions on them in California and they (mostly) obeyed them. It wouldn't surprise me if the same pattern happens elsewhere (district judge temporary restraining order on the whole activation without permission from the governor, stayed except for limiting their scope)

I had times available for both Walgreens and CVS near me and, in both cases, the first date available was September 4th, which is probably when it's getting shipped in (or they want to get it started after the holiday weekend)

Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd love to see someone take that Texas map, map voting precincts onto it and see what would happen if people vote as they did in 2018. I don't have an ability to do that, but Trump's popularity is tracking close to what he was running at this point in his first term.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
It's still a year off, but if the election was today before gerrymandering, Trump would take a major thumping. Trump definitely has supporters who will only show up if he's on the ballot, his support among Latinos could collapse and the older/college educated voters show up more reliably.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
My two analogs for this election are Obama and Trump's first midterm elections where both lost a ton of seats in Congress. Obama managed to turn out a lot of low-propensity voters (as did Trump) and those voters didn't show up in the midterms when their candidate was underwater.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
With the approval yesterday, both of my local pharmacies (CVS and Walgreens) made it available. The procedure to sign up for the shot was the same as before except it now asks if I'm over 65 or have a risk factor. Once I answered yes, I was able to sign up for it.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
There's a very good reason why that 44-year-old Lee Atwater interview where he said the quiet part out loud is still relevant. Tipping point was when calling out racism was seen as more offensive than being racist as long as the speaker refrained from using actual racial slurs.

Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I can assure you that nothing is going to look like government waste more than two dozen bored guys standing guard at each of our 168 post offices.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
If they DID send the guard to Chicago and a court limited them to what they had in LA (guarding federal buildings, protecting federal officers), there are like 5 big Federal buildings and no border to guard, so they'd REALLY be twiddling their thumbs here.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I have to wonder if Trump is looking at the Guard deployment to DC, where he doesn't have the same constraints on what he has the guard do, there are a million Federal buildings, he can order the DC police around and they're picking up trash, mulching and looking bored at a train station...
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
Beyond all of this, DC deserves a lot better than to have their government micromanaged by a bunch of goobers in Congress.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
They need statehood. Absolutely the first thing Democrats need to do the next time they have a trifecta.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not a veteran, but if I was, I'd be really pissed off that Trump decided to do this to a bunch of soldiers who signed on to stay ready, help their country and maybe be activated to fill sandbags when a flood is coming or clear roads after a hurricane. They didn't sign up for this.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
This is a bully taking people away from their jobs for a month because DC's unique status means he can send in the guard and micromanage their police. And there's nothing for them to do so they're milling around a train station, picking up trash and spreading mulch.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
I have a ton of respect for anyone who signs up for the guard. The deal is that we pay them, they devote a weekend every month and a few weeks to stay ready and they're available if we have a war, natural disaster or other vital reason to activate them. This isn't remotely close to that.
Steve in Chicago (@spsnomad.bsky.social) reply parent
