Also and to be clear, I don't know and will have to evaluate when we know what 2028 actually looks like, but staking out this position now makes having to make that choice later less likely. People are doing politics by arguing strongly for a position when it's the least relevant electorally.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course, that also means he misspeaks, but that's something someone like Mamdani seems able to avoid by having an extra scoop of charisma. I just don't think we win by alienating existing voters, and I doubly don't think we do that in the name of people who wish they were still Republicans.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
For me, it's why I prefer Walz to most other 2028 options. He doesn't speak in signals, he rather plainly states his position and will try and argue for it. I find that far more persuasive and in my Blue Guy in a Red State experience, you get far more respect for doing it that way.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
In what other field do we ask academics to be less precise with their words because they might get taken out of context by a potentially politically signed journalist who, in their ideal world, would be in the opposition party?
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Academics and activists are also "in industry," them using jargon isn't the problem, people digging up academic articles using that jargon (because it's the precise and technical term i.e. birthing person) and then claiming it's a Democratic problem are.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, she absolutely would. I'm not sure I would, either. Newsom is helping make a meaner world for people we care about because he seems to think it will win him votes attacking trans people today, but why trust that it stops there?
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
(sorry for the multi posts, I'm still used to Reddit and not great at condensing my thoughts)
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
To paraphrase a smarter person than I, a whole lot of people who had fully bought in to the ideals of liberalism saw our leaders support a blatantly betray those ideals for Palestinians even as they supported them for Ukraine, and rather than accept "realpolitik" as an answer they kept the ideals.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
If you think it's a genocide, someone saying "nothing with fundamentally change" isn't going to really help. Harris was kinda screwed over and had to simultaneously defend the admin she was a part of while also distancing herself.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm firmly in the "speak plain English" camp for most politicians, but chiding people in industry for using industry jargon isn't that, and that's most of the examples given when I've asked.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
I have friends in similar boats with various red lines, generally for personal life/work reasons. I also don't see people insisting politicians use them, but the Tom's chide the party for people like them (low level cogs in non profit machines) using them as if they're party operatives, actually.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Depends where you spend your time. My sister has a social worker type job and uses them and absolutely will not vote Newsom, as an example.

It is absolutely criminal that as the GOP crows about urban crime, every Dem isn’t on TV saying, “Look, Larry Hogan is a so-called ‘moderate’ Republican and crime in his state’s largest city has plummeted since he was replaced by a Democrat.”
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
If you saw Gaza as a genocide, and many do, I don't think it's hard to understand. A whole lot of people gave themselves trauma watching non-stop horror and he was the American most able to do anything, and he mostly enabled the horror.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Doesn't mean I agree with those people, but blaming them isn't going to help, it just drives a deeper wedge between the people who show up and the party. Doubly so if they also doubt the party's commitment as Newsom clears homeless encampments or casts doubt on commitment to trans rights.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
And as I said, it's that attitude that loses more voters than the word itself. The sort of person using those terms is also the person volunteering for the party, putting non party members over them is discouraging. And it's about far more than just words people use, that's just the most recent.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
The attitude that "they're already committed, appeal to the right/center" is at least as much the issue as the specific examples. All it takes is a few people not voting here as some still voting but not volunteering there, and it's at best a wash and I'd argue somewhat harmful.

Some assets certainly are, others are surrounded by farm fields or forests. Why assume people saying the US would have to degrade that AA mean "bomb Beijing?" climateviewer.org/history-and-...

Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
I think this is specifically @bretdevereaux.bsky.social's nightmare American education system.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Again: you're the only person insisting the US degrading Chinese AA means specifically means hitting population centers. This is a pointless convo until you recognize that you're steelmanning a hypothetical Chinese surprise attack while strawmanning the retaliation.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's because Tom in particular very much isn't a "liberal" (but is anti Trump!) but insists liberals should say and do things that alienate the party base to attract a handful of former opposition voters. If they had the numbers, I don't think they would have lost the GOP on the first place.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Honolulu isn't a major population center? Attacking like for like isn't an escalation, you're the only person who insists that degrading Chinese AA capabilities in response to China doing the same means attacking specifically population centers, as if that's the sum total of assets.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
If the people don't matter, I don't see why you keep using proximity to population centers as a metric? Why is the assumption that China's attacks are fine and non-escalatory but the American response is inherently so? You keep talking about hitting downtowns in China, but only bases in US.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
I think attacking US assets on US territory in close proximity to US civilians, yes. You keep downplaying that, do you consider. Guam and it's people lesser than downtown LA? Hawaii is an actual state, why are they less important than LA? What if it's just Portland or Seattle?
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
No, I don't think you have ulterior motives, I think you're flatly wrong and advocating for a policy that would lead to more war and death and destruction, not less. In the scenario we're discussing, they already struck populated US areas, doing the same simply isn't escalation.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Or rather, retaliating in kind is escalation, actually, and therefore shouldn't be done in your opinion.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
You're saying retaliating in kind is off limits, how you choose to dress it up doesn't really matter?
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
So you're saying the correct response to being attacked unprovoked by a peer power to to simply accept it and do nothing? Sorry man, that's cowardice. I'm not saying this because I think it makes me brave, I'm saying it because it makes the US far less safe and future attacks far more likely.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
No, the escalation was bombing US soil. Rolling over and letting China bomb US soil and not doing the same isn't de escalation, it's cowardice. You set the precedent that they can bomb us but we won't do the same. If anything, it makes escalation even more likely.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Except we'd already be at war, the strike being discussed hits US based on US soil. Attacking Beijing to kill leadership is also very, very different than attacking anti air installations.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
If we're in a shooting way with China that includes hitting US territory and aerial fights over/a naval invasion of Taiwan, no, there are no other real options unless we want to fight to not lose, which is a great way to ultimately lose anyways.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent

Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
No one but the people who voted that way deserve it, and I'd still rather they have public service than not. But we lost that fight, massive cuts did happen, and it's going to hurt rural voters more than urban. It's a bummer, but I'm not going to support cutting hospitals in my city, they can drive.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
They just said that people should get the policies they vote for, you're the one pretending that means everyone who suffers as a result deserves it. And yeah, people should get what they vote for, protecting the electorate from the worst of the GOP is why they dismiss what they say as just words.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Can you point to someone saying whole states deserve it? I've seen people saying people should get what they vote for, but deserve has nothing to do with it. Instead of saying it's bad, we need to constantly and incessantly remind people this is what Trump ran on and what he wants for them.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Will go* not should. We just cut a trillion dollars from the health care budget, people *are* going to suffer, it's too late to avoid that one.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe, but it's also just how democratic societies function. We all get the policies the majority/plurality vote for.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
They ran on cutting Medicaid and there were endless stories about how precarious rural healthcare systems were. I'd rather cut no funding, but there's a trillion dollar hole now. What communities would you rather have eat the cuts?
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
So context matters now? None of those kids voted for it, and that's your argument against triaging healthcare funds, why doesn't it matter now?
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. That's how voting and living in a society work, on the most basic level. Thankfully Omaha has the population base to eat these cuts without too much trouble, but that means they will be cutting rural outreach which costs more and serves fewer people.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
No one deserves it, it's simply the reality we live in. Your anger should be with the people who voted to cause this, not people trying to minimize the impact by stretching funds as best they can.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Do the children in the countries we sanction vote for the things we're sanctioning them for? Hell, did anyone in most of them? I agree they shouldn't suffer, it's a shame more people voted that they should than shouldn't.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Solidarity isn't a suicide pact, the shitty situation we find ourselves in won't get better no matter how loudly you insist it should. So what communities are you arguing to see cuts instead of rural ones? Don't give me some wishy washy BS, these are the questions we need to answer right now.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
You may as well say you're in favor of candy and unicorns. These are actual budgets involving thousands of jobs, we need actual plans on how to handle the bills already passed and going into effect.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
And the military shouldn't be engaged in occupying American cities. But both those ships have sailed, hospitals have already announced they will be closing as the budget cuts come into effect, now it's a matter of which hospitals stay open.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
Not maybe, it is already happening, and you aren't going to cut my urban hospital funding to support rural ones that serve a fraction of the population.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not collective punishment, it's a triage and rationing of now far scarcer resources. Shit sucks, wish people didn't vote for it, but they did, and now here we are.
Sean (@titaniumman91.bsky.social) reply parent
As a red state liberal, no you. People *are* going to suffer, the chance to avoid that date was last November. Now it's just a matter of triage, and urban areas do the most for the most with the least amount of money.
