I could have said it better ...maybe that we shouldn't criticize people for simply having a spiritual life or believing in a presence that we cannot see with our eyes or touch with our hands. As for the kids, I'm talking about parental decisions.

My mother was told, as a child, that she would go to purgatory if she fidgeted while kneeling in church. A different time. My beliefs have more to do with how we live in relation to others. Golden rule kind of stuff.
About the prayers at your mom's service. People should be aware to not interject their beliefs in an uncertain setting. Reading your bit reminds me to be mindful. My condolences, BTW. Losing mom is a special kind of sad. Miss mine.
You may be right. I have been alarmed at what I've seen.
The person is my sister. I am in my silver hair days so have known a lotta peeps but she stands out. Religious texts (I've seen a few) are not something that I find elementary or boring. They can be quite complex.
I have seen a number of people attacked on this site for believing in God & they were quite ugly. I have also seen it in my regular life. I will say that attacks against atheists are pretty ugly and far more numerous, for sure. And, FWIW, I am also kind of old.
I truly wonder how many "Republican" wives of Republican husbands are secretly casting Democrat votes in their private voting booth. I've known a few. Perhaps this is the concern.
Criticizing an individual's beliefs is, to me, on the same level as telling someone how to raise or guide their children. It's not for you to say.
1) Religion, in general, can be criticized. 2) Each specific religion can be recognized for its strengths and it's failings. 3) Attacking an individual for having spiritual beliefs is as wrong as attacking them for having none. Nobody is certain. All, believers & non, are potentially wrong.
I never saw this either. I'm a believer. But I only discuss it with others who believe as I do. And I feel no disdain toward people of other beliefs or none. And for what it's worth, the most "Christian" person in my world has not stepped into a church for over 50 years.
