I don't want work arounds. There was a time, where an app was delivered in c source and you compiled it to your OS target. I kinda have a little exp here. I worked for a co that delivered sw that ran on windows, unix (all 3 versions) and linux. I submitted my 1st prog on 30 80 column IBM cards
That was probably 10 yrs ago. I have associates that are currently using Linux for certain things, but for the reasons I have stated, they all depend on Windows for apps that won't run on Linux. Again, most of us want an OS that will run everything we need.
Let me try this on you. I require a software package to run my security sys. I could rail on this in depth, but I don't want to spend the time. Most people have the need for programs that simply won't run on Linux.
I tried Linux, an open source OS derived from unix, which I hated. Wouldn't let me do the stuff I needed. And I needed to run a variety of software packages that a linux version wasn't available. XP was the pinnacle of modern OS and it is gone.
OS manages hrdw and sw resources, acting as an intermediary between the usr and the comp's hrdw to provide a convenient and efficient environment for executing progs. Key resps inc mem mgmt, file mgmt, dev mgmt, processor mgmt, and ensuring sys sec and usr interaction through an interface
