Nationalism in and of itself isn't the problem. It's the noxious expressions of it--eg., hollow eliminationist ethnonationalism. It sounds like you're talking about people who do have the imagination to love where they live. American white nationalists aren't liberating themselves from anything.
That's a thing that makes American White Christian Nationalism so infuriating. The things they're willing to kill to defend aren't any of them the things that are unique or special about their society and culture.
It's inherently parochial, but paradoxically universal through its simplicity. If you can study an example of something in a different language and culture and apply the lessons directly in a completely different one, there's nothing unique about it.

When those people get drawn in they often put them in prominent positions in order to show audiences who need evidence to levy against their critics (undecideds) that they aren't what they're accused of being. Eventually those symbolic members are removed. Historic example: the Sturmabteilung.
Apologies, I guess I take it for granted that people are aware of how these orgs work. They very much need and welcome false legitimacy that comes from having members of groups they marginalize who are willing to defend their ideologies. It's an old historical component of this kind of extremism.
