You can be empathetic and still hold to meaningful boundaries, without condoning the actions of the recipient. Imagine, a high-schooler speeds, runs off the road, destroys a car and is injured. I can have empathy for them and their plight but certainly wouldn't condone their actions.
That's not my understanding, but I certainly don't know everything. They competed against Boeing and others to win contracts. Boeing has failed to provide "shuttle service" to the ISS, for example, missed deadlines, whereas SpaceX has succeeded. I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.
