Did cases drop, or not? Are they correlated, or not?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
It'd actually be 0-200k even by your logic because excess death data is exceedingly noisy, and you're conveniently ignoring the lower bound.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Does that chart correlate with the reported death rate, yes or no?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
9 > 7, sorry I can't type out a reply and read something in my notifications simultaneously.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Do you know how the arrow of time works? Maybe check those timestamps, champ.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
That graph isn't even measuring per day.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah I see, so now the excess deaths charts are all wrong, too. And in the same exact way, very convenient. I assume this means the wastewater charts will also magically all be wrong if I link one that also shows an obvious acute phase from 2020-2022 that closely follows reported cases?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Except they don't.

Are you advocating for murder on the grounds that it will cost smuggling operations more to replace drug mules than boats?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Again, what the hell are you talking about? The US Coast Guard is, at most, 200 miles away from shore at all times. The boat with the fuel issues is the one that had to travel through international waters first.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Don't do that. You send an interdiction vessel after it and track its movements with the aircraft. This is like asking how the police are supposed to disable someone who's speeding from a police helicopter. Just total moon logic.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
What the fuck are you talking about? That's not even remotely by the book. That's some bullshit you just made up.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
That's moronic.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
IMO, Young Frankenstein continues to be the best adaptation to this day, because Mel Brooks clearly read and watched all the previous ones and he makes fun of all of them. The happy ending is pretty much "what if Victor wasn't a deadbeat dad, and what if the Creature didn't turn into an incel".
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Frankenstein is an especially weird case because there's also several different versions of the source material. The Hollywood adaptations are based loosely on the 1831, which places way more emphasis on the very act of creating the monster being a mistake, instead of Victor being a deadbeat dad.

Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Seems to me you're the one supporting purity tests, but from the right-wing point of view. I.E, even though MattY is vocally opposed to most left wing issues, the fact that he supports even one of them automatically makes him left wing because he failed the right wing purity test.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Is Liz Cheney left wing? Or is "supports abortion" not the only axis defining that term?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Is "keep abortion legal (because it's popular)" the defining characteristic of left-wing, to you? Because if so, lmao. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
He currently appears to think that several of those things run directly contrary to restoring a functional democracy.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
You think Liz Cheney is for for all those things because she's pro-democracy?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
You're the one who claimed he was on the fringe of progressive ideology, by the way. bsky.app/profile/chri...
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Like, what does left wing even mean to you? Just left of neofascism?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Are MattY and Liz Cheney left wing? Or does the broad anti-Trump coalition simply include some right-wingers?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
I just think it's really weird how you've shifted to the goalposts from "MattY is on the rightward fringe of progressivism", to "MattY is in our coalition and so is Cheney, and trying to dig any deeper than that is semantics." Like, if you don't think MattY is a progressive you can just say it lol.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
I also think you should also take a good hard look at what Liz Cheney actually accomplished in the Coalition, and then ask yourself how much sense it makes to include the Liz Cheneys of the coalition at the discussion table.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
So, is Liz Cheney a progressive, or are there simply more than just progressives in "our coalition"? Because if it's the latter, you need to provide evidence for MattY being a progressive outside of the fact that he's "in our coalition".
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Is Liz Cheney in "our coalition"?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Liz Cheney "falls to the left of the Amercian political divide" right now, but calling her a progressive would be extremely silly. I think he's mostly advocating that progressives shut up and vote for whatever candidate or platform he likes.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Is he not advocating that "the coalition" abandon those things? Seems to me he doesn't hold any progressive positions at all, and has only ever advocated for any on the basis that they're electorally popular and therefore cynically useful.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Like abandoning labor and civil liberties?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
I dunno, I think if you've moved to the right of "civil liberties" you're not in the progressive coalition anymore.

Yeah, housing costs in popular cities are simply fucked. They've gotten worse way faster than inflation, but they've also been fucked for a while. I don't think the average person in their 20's has been able to afford a house in a nice area for a good 30-40 years, most places.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Post-covid, a lot of the non-gatekept gig work jobs like Uber also got enshittified because they were propped up by VC bucks. So there's specific groups of workers who got screwed over particularly hard by a combination of higher rent and Uber effectively cutting their pay.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
That's just been the state of the labor market for decades tbh. Even when it's booming, and post-covid was a booming labor market, all the good jobs are gate-kept behind education. And student loans and housing have both been going up faster than inflation for decades.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
All of those things are included in the inflation metric, and to be clear, we did have a huge spike in inflation during the recovery. It's part of why you see real wages plummet back down to pre-covid levels. People have higher salaries, but stuff costs more, too.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
The only class that was really screwed during the Covid recovery, if you take the long view, has been the managerial class. Their real wages are now rising slower than workers wages are. Everyone just remembers the massive high of 2020 real wages though, and is projecting it backward onto 2019.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
They have kept up, is the thing. Like, we have loads of data on this. We even have a term for inflation adjusted wages: real wages. They spiked massively in 2020, then faded back down to pre-covid levels post-pandemic. They've consistently been higher than pre-pandemic, though.

To me, it just feels like schools banning a new distraction. I grew up right in the middle of the transition to smartphones, and there were plenty of 'mean' teachers who'd have personal policies of confiscating yours if you had it out. Looking back, those teachers did some of the best jobs.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
But with phones, that dynamic suddenly becomes amplified. The instant a student looks at their phone, they're no longer just disengaged, their focus has completely shifted to something else. They aren't even vaguely aware of what the teacher is doing anymore, so they don't re-engage naturally.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
With phones, the problem is that anytime a student is disengaged at all, they're sorely tempted to look at their phone. Disengagement is just a natural part of group learning, students can't keep 100% focus at all times and the teacher can't personally focus on all of them at once.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree with your approach in theory, it just doesn't work in a group context. Like, you can't let every kid on a field trip see exactly what they want, because letting them all wander off would be bad, and there's also usually a desired learning outcome everyone in the group should achieve.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Two is about the maximum number of kids you can effectively teach at the same time if they've got access to phones.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Taking up phones is treating the symptoms of kids using phones in class, and it's doing it very effectively. Have you tried to teach a group of kids anything, recently? Phones are simply an order of magnitude worse than any other distraction I've seen them latch onto. They're distracting to adults!
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Historically, installing arch on school desktops was more the cause of detentions.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Kids are not using their phones for learning in class lol. They're using them to play Clash of Clans, watch TikTok brainrot, and text their friends. In that order.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
Are you saying you're against universal education?
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
I think modern phones and the ecosystem around them comes with its own autonomy issues. It's just the parents imposing them instead of the teachers, which in a lot of ways is worse.
Faine Greenwood (@faineg.bsky.social) reposted
all American schools should ban phone use during class hours, but we CAN compromise by bringing back Internet-connected computer labs where the nerd kids can retreat to look at fanfic during lunch
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
The ideal school computer is one that teaches kids how to use technology the same way we teach crows how to solve puzzles. It should be difficult and convoluted, but not impossible, to install pirated video games and bypass the network security on them. What I'm saying is they should be Arch.

Their biggest loss leader now is probably the free app rewards, which is fantastic for their profits because it means 100% of the people "buying" those rewards are high traffic customers, by design. Those corporate apps are the real killers of cheap fast food options.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
They have definitely shifted their loss leaders to be pricier options, though. Like, the 5 dollar meal box is now the "cheap" menu item. It's also more food than one burrito, tbf. They also want everyone using their app, so that's where all the good deals are.
Kozu (@kozufox.bsky.social) reply parent
