70 million people on Medicaid vs 35 million living below the poverty line just shows how expensive health insurance is and not how many people are committing fraud. These guys ignore the easy answers to build a narrative that fits their agenda.

Millions work for small businesses that are not required (and not able) to provide employer based health plans. They have to find their own individual plans. Does he really not understand Medicaid eligibility? It’s not as simple as who lives below the Federal poverty line. Some states expanded eligibility to 138% of FPL. 138% for a single person is only $21,597. Who can live independently on this? Q. Why isn’t the FPL higher? Why are incomes so low?

jul 1, 2025, 11:39 am • 51 4 • view
avatar
🏳️‍🌈☽✩☾🏳️‍🌈 @kestra.bsky.social

Answer to your second question is, no fed staffer, team, office, dept, or agency is going to raise the FPL to something commensurate with modern COL, because then ~40 million more people are "in poverty" overnight. So we will keep calculating eligibility based on %age AMI and FPL is frozen in amber.

The poverty threshold for a family of four in 2023 was $27,740. Rent runs $1800 to $3000 a month. Say it’s $2000 a month- $24,000 a year. Health insurance does little for those who can’t afford to eat. A family of four making $28,000 can’t afford health insurance.

You know why they did? Because they ran on it for decades, and when they got close to passing it, they got crushed in the midterms. Even Biden discussing a public option didn’t drum up enough public support. A majority of voters chose to gut government spending.

If most people support a public option, why were Democrats crushed in the 2010 midterms as backlash to the possibility of the ACA providing a public option? Why did more people who swung for Trump believe that Harris would pass M4A than those who swung for Harris?

I think what you have to understand is that, when asked on a survey, many people reflect upon its benefit to them. This is how they SHOULD approach policies, but they don’t. Because all it takes is for Republicans to talk about how non-white people would benefit more to get these people to flip.

Because they don’t have the votes? You need 60 senators to override the filibuster, and 50 senators to eliminate the filibuster (which Sinema and Manchin objected to). The closest they got to a public option was in 2009, and they literally got crushed in the midterms because of it.

There are Obamacare Marketplace subsidies that get low-income people very low premiums, in many cases $0/month. Of course Mullins's party is trying to take those away too. www.kff.org/policy-watch... Those provisions will take healthcare away from more people than the Medicaid changes.

I find healthcare very confusing and clearly am not alone. I feel like some of the Medicaid cuts include these subsidies bc they are Medicaid by another name, but again I don’t fully get it. I have managed care (kaiser) but I know some under it are there under Medicare I think. It’s so confusing…

jul 1, 2025, 12:44 am • 3 0 • view
avatar
Yastreblyansky @yastreblyansky.bsky.social

It is indeed confusing. Here's a quick tutorial: 1. Medicaid is for low-income people and is a true single-payer system. 2. Medicare is for retired and disabled people and makes you pay premiums and copays: if you're too poor, there's a Medicaid *supplement* program that will help.

jul 1, 2025, 1:13 am • 2 1 • view
avatar
Yastreblyansky @yastreblyansky.bsky.social

3. Health Insurance Marketplace, the Obama contribution, is private insurance you can buy online if your employer doesn't pay for health insurance, and it's pretty good, especially for low-income but not really poor people. When my son the bartender turned 26 and got kicked off my employer policy...

Yastreblyansky @yastreblyansky.bsky.social

...I told him I thought he could get an Obamacare policy but didn't try to help him beyond advice; it took him a year (luckily he's been incredibly healthy) but he did it. The GOP bill may make it unaffordable by cutting the subsidy, but I don't know yet.

jul 1, 2025, 1:23 am • 3 0 • view
avatar
Yastreblyansky @yastreblyansky.bsky.social

4. Medicare Advantage is a way for private insurers to suck money out of the Medicare program, a supplemental policy that may pay for some things where Medicare is unhelpful, but a lot of people don't think it's worthwhile.

The subsidies are the disaster no one's talking about . Heavy subsidies for people working but not making much. Here in Maine, less than $100/mo for a silver plan. (Still deductibles, etc. but you're buying preventative/routine stuff...
